Our intellectual property/information technology (IP/IT) practice group provides a full range of IP/IT-related services. These include handling litigation in relation to the infringement of various IP rights, including patents, designs, trademarks, copyright, unfair competition and trade secret disputes. Our IP/IT group is also active in the prosecution and management of proceedings relating to trademark and design applications and registrations, as well as technology transfers and other IP and information technology acquisition, licensing and protection issues. Specifically, the group provides the following services:
Representation of clients, particularly in the electronics, pharmaceutical and automotive industries, in patent litigation, both in the Tokyo High Court concerning patent validity and in the various courts for patent infringement.
Representation of clients concerning trademark prosecution and infringement.
Representation of clients in cases of unfair competition.
Investigations and opinions on validity and infringement.
Representation in other court and customs proceedings concerning the cancellation, invalidation, opposition, and infringement of intellectual property rights.
In addition, the IP/IT group's rapidly expanding IT practice specializes in meeting the needs of companies operating in the hi-tech, Internet service provider, e-commerce, computer, multimedia, and network industries. The IT practice addresses the unique needs of IT companies by providing licensing, anti-trust, and regulatory advice and support.

Overall, our IP/IT group has a dynamic overseas IP practice and it works closely with various Baker & McKenzie offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia to extend its IP services to clients globally. The group is well experienced in handling IP matters for the United States and European markets, and frequently works with its international counterparts to coordinate inbound and outbound work for our clients.
Many of the lawyers in this group are experienced practicing in foreign jurisdictions and coupled with the extensive knowledge of our domestic lawyers (bengoshi), and the English-Japanese bilingual skills of all our lawyers, the group is able to offer a unique IP service to foreign and domestic companies operating both in Japan and internationally.

The IP/IT practice group can also tap into the broader network of 3,300 Baker & McKenzie attorneys in 70 offices worldwide for assistance with corporate, tax, finance, merger and acquisition, and dispute resolution matters.
